Members of Lagos State House of Assembly have called for an adoption of state police as a veritable solution in alleviating insecurity in the state.
The lawmakers in a plenary on Monday stressed the need for an immediate amendment of the 1999 constitution to enable the adoption.
In a crux of an urgent motion raised by the House Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, the legislators reviewed the recent attack by some gunmen in the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu local government.
Obasa reminisced that two persons identified as Suru Arije, 59, and Ilufoye Azeez, 30, were killed, a woman was abducted and four vigilantes were injured when gunmen attacked in the Ikorodu area of Lagos on Wednesday, last week.
“At the weekend, we heard of the attack on a commercial bus and the passengers abducted,” said Obasa.
“This time around the National Assembly should be our focus. They don’t have to wait till the twilight of their tenure to start a constitutional amendment.
“This administration is at the beginning of its four years. So, the National Assembly should begin the amendment now and we should be part of it to put an end to the issue of state police,” Obasa said.
Member of the Assembly representing Ikorodu Constituency 02, Hon. Moshood Aro, while speaking on the attack, highlighted some sustainable solutions to the pervasive insecurity.
Aro stated that the immediate establishment of state police, clearing of bushes around residential areas by the Ministry of Environment, and completion of major roads in Igbogbo will effect a major significance to achieve the feat.
He also urged the Lagos State Government to properly equip the Neighborhood Safety Corps and other local security outfits.
