The Lagos State government has implemented various measures to mitigate potential emergencies and disasters, following early warnings from the Federal Government regarding flood-prone areas within the state.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), highlighted these efforts during a recent sensitization campaign held in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).
As part of the preparations, the Lagos State government conducted risk analysis and is confident in its readiness to handle emergencies if they occur. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that necessary machinery has been deployed to prevent incidents and protect the environment.
He said several local government areas, including Eti-Osa, Kosofe, Apapa Alimosho, and Amuwo Odofin, have been identified as high-risk flood zones. LASEMA has mobilized emergency responders to these commu

He noted that the partnership between LASEMA and LASEPA is crucial to these preventative efforts, as environmental protection plays a vital role in emergency management.
He reaffirmed the Lagos State government commitment to effective communication and has established a well-equipped command center to coordinate relief efforts.
He said three relief camps have been activated across the state to accommodate displaced persons should the need arise.
Furthermore, he recognizing the localized nature of emergencies and the importance of collective responsibility, local council emergency response teams have been set up and activated to ensure a prompt and coordinated response to any potential crisis.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents to adhere to environmental laws and support the government’s efforts to ensure the well-being and safety of all citizens.
He emphasized Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to emergency management, highlighting his strong leadership and political will in addressing these challenges.
“We need to thank the Governor for providing the working tools and support for the different emergency responders to work effectively.” He said the governor’s efforts have helped to reduce mortality and morbidity from disasters
The GM, LASEPA, Babatunde Ajayi, welcomed the partnership, saying his agenda will be more vigilant especially in the areas that have been identified.
“We will in turn reach out to these communities and let them understand that disaster management is every one’s responsibility.”
