Konga Urges Nigerian Artists to Give Back to Music Legends
Veteran Nigerian singer Konga has expressed concern over what he describes as the lack of support from contemporary artists towards music pioneers in the country.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, the Kabakaba crooner said many industry legends are being neglected, forcing some into menial jobs abroad due to financial hardship.
Konga specifically referenced the ₦200 million donation received by Davido in 2021, which was later increased to ₦250 million with an additional ₦50 million from the singer himself and distributed to 292 orphanages across Nigeria.
He argued that such funds could have been directed towards supporting struggling music veterans, saying it would have helped revive their careers and strengthen the industry’s legacy.
Konga urged younger artists to show more humility and give back, insisting that many of today’s stars are building on the foundation laid by earlier generations.
He also highlighted legendary Nigerian musicians such as Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, and Majek Fashek, noting that their contributions to global music were significant, even if not widely documented at the time.
According to him, Nigerian music has long had an international presence, and today’s successes are built on the efforts of earlier generations who paved the way.
