The Authority of Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) will soon commence enforcement of law prohibiting indiscriminate wastes disposal while residents would be mandated to place waste bins in front of their houses.

Speaking with ECHONEWS on the rate of indiscriminate waste disposal in the council area, the council leader, Hon. Remy Shittu said the legislative arm has enacted Bye-laws that prohibit indiscriminate waste disposal and encourage provision of waste bin by each household.

The council leader made this known while addressing the issue of flood that has been affecting the residents of Okota community, noting that the flood has held economic and social activities to ransom in the area.

He noted that one of the causes of the usual flood in the area is habitual indiscriminate wastes disposal especially in the drainages by residents and roadside traders hence.

He said the government has to enforce the law to curb the situation, saying all efforts by the government may not yield positive results without the enforcement of the law.

While identifying with those whose residence and places of business got affected by the downpour, Remy said the downpour disrupted business activities and held traffic to ransom was alarming especially as the flood surprisingly extended to Otunba Akin Joakim Junction compared to last year that it was limited to Community Junction.

He blamed residents who throw waste into drains as the main culprits, admitting that the indiscriminate act of wastes (recyclables) disposal into the drainage especially by residents and roadside traders is the cause of the flooding.

He thanked member representing the constituency at the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Engr. Ganiyu Abiodun for facilitating the dredging of the canal adding that the completion of the dredging exercise will ease flow of water from gutters and drainage into the canal.

“I will advise that we complement government’s relentless efforts towards tackling flood in our environment by desisting from pouring our wastes indiscriminately into the drainage and clear our drainage as often as possible especially during this season. It is through these civic acts that our environment can be flood-free.

“While I will like to appreciate some residents who have commendably been responsible to the community, I will equally like to draw our attention once more to the fact that enforcement of some bye-laws especially the ones that make it compulsory for us to have, at least, a waste bin at the front of each house and prohibit indiscriminate waste disposal will commence shortly.”
