The Chairman of Isolo Local council Development Area, Mr. Olasoju Adebayo in response to the announcement by Lagos State’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, declaring a ban on single-use plastics and styrofoam has expressed full concurrence with the directive.

Given that Lagos State is a coastal zone and these goods constitute an immediate threat to the climate and ecosystem, Olasoju applauded the commissioner for taking a proactive approach.

In addition, the head of the council vowed to assist the ban’s enforcement within Isolo Council at any costs. He underlined that his administration is prepared to launch extensive awareness and sensitization programs, aimed at businesses that produce and utilize single-use plastics and styrofoam. By enforcing the prohibition strictly, this tactical method hopes to instill a culture of environmental responsibility in the neighborhood.

“This is a welcomed development and a step that is long overdue given the fact that there have been laws like the National Environmental (Sanitation and Waste Control Regulation) 2009 and the 2017 Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Laws in existence; both of which need to be implemented if our dear state must avoid the likely negative result of continued degradation of our environment. We will immediately look into ways of bringing more recyclers on board to help address the scourge of plastic bottle nuisance within our council area as that in itself poses danger; albeit less to the styrofoam and single-use plastics”.

By aligning with the state’s initiative, Olasoju underscores the critical role local governments play in implementing and reinforcing environmental policies, fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly future for Lagos State.
