In commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week, August 1st to 7th, Ikorodu North LCDA, in partnership with Lagos State Health District 2, kick off the celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, to promote breastfeeding awareness.
The theme, “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All,” emphasized the importance of supporting mothers to successfully breastfeed.
Mothers who participated in the event by answering questions related to breastfeeding received gifts courtesy of the Local Government.
Chairman, Builder Deola Banjo, represented by Hon. Niyi Odugbesi, Secretary to the Local Government delivered the keynote address, urging mothers to prioritize breastfeeding, stating:
“Breastfeeding is the foundation of a child’s health and development. It is essential for their growth, cognitive development, and immune system. As a responsible government, we must ensure that every mother has access to the necessary support and resources to breastfeed successfully. This includes creating a conducive environment, providing education, and promoting breastfeeding-friendly policies.
I implore all mothers to take advantage of this natural gift and breastfeed their children exclusively for the first six months. It is crucial for their brain development, health, and overall well-being. Let us work together to create a society that values and supports breastfeeding, and ensures that every child gets the best possible start in life.”
Permanent Secretary Dayo Olajide, represented by Dr. Kehinde Wajeri, highlighted the benefits of breastfeeding, saying:
“Breast milk provides optimal nutrition for infants, boosting their immune system and reducing the risk of infections. It also lowers the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, later in life. Breastfeeding enhances cognitive development, improves memory, and increases IQ. It’s a natural way to promote healthy growth and development in our children.
“Breastfeeding has benefits for mothers too! It helps with postpartum weight loss, reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and lowers the risk of postpartum depression. Let’s work together to create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers. We must ‘Close the Gap’ and ensure that every mother has access to the resources and support she needs to successfully breastfeed.”
