Ikorodu City Slip in NPFL Title Race After Heavy Defeat to Plateau United
Lagos-based side Ikorodu City suffered a major setback in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title race after a 4-1 defeat to Plateau United at Lafia on Monday.
Echonews reports that the loss dealt a blow to Ikorodu City’s push for the title, as they missed the opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Rangers International.
Following the result, Ikorodu City now trail both Rangers International and Rivers United, who are level on 55 points, by three points with five matches remaining in the season.
Plateau United took control of the game with two second-half goals, as Kazeem Adeyanju and Ossy Martins found the net in the 50th and 72nd minutes respectively.
Ikorodu City responded through Ali Moses, who pulled one back to give the visitors hope of a comeback.
However, Plateau United extended their lead late in the game, with Martins completing his brace in the 88th minute before Victor Dawa sealed the victory in stoppage time.
The win lifts Plateau United to eighth position on the NPFL table with 46 points.
In another fixture, Abia Warriors strengthened their chances of securing a continental slot with a 1-0 victory over Bayelsa United.
Former NPFL top scorer, Emeka Obioma, netted the decisive goal just before the hour mark to secure all three points for Abia Warriors.
The result moves Abia Warriors to fourth position with 52 points, while Bayelsa United remain in 16th place on 40 points.
