Ifako-Ijaiye Flags Off Vaccine for Deadly Multiple Diseases

Today October 18, 2024, a momentous event unfolded as the First Lady of Lagos, Mrs. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Victoria Olowu, the wife of the Special Adviser on Mineral Resources, joined forces with the Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye LG, Mr. Usman Akanbi Hamzat, and the Chairperson of the Local Government, Mrs. Fausat Adejumoke Hamzat, to officially launch the Integrated Supplemental Immunization Activities (ISIA) in Ifako-Ijaiye and Lagos State.

During the event, the First Lady expressed the government’s dedication to fostering equitable healthcare access and improving overall well-being across the state. One significant initiative exemplifying this commitment is the Non-Polio Supplemental Immunisation campaign, set to commence on October 19 with the objective of vaccinating approximately 18 million residents against preventable diseases.

She emphasized the significance of prioritizing the well-being of all children in Lagos State, irrespective of their social status, religion, or ethnicity. She stressed that every child deserves equal attention and care as they represent the future of the nation.

She highlighted the importance of the vaccination campaign, stating that it not only addresses current health concerns but also safeguards against potential diseases and viruses that may affect children and individuals in the future.

To ensure the success of the initiative, she urged parents, guardians, and other stakeholders to actively participate and fulfill their roles in supporting the campaign. The collective involvement of the community is crucial in achieving the goal of improved public health and well-being for all.

Furthermore she explained that vaccinations play a vital role in preventing health issues, reducing the need for frequent hospital visits. Therefore, she underscored the importance of parental involvement in ensuring children receive the necessary immunizations.

Declaring the campaign against Measles, Yellow fever, and HPV officially open, she reminded everyone that healthcare is a basic human right, not a privilege, and urged individuals of all ages to participate actively. By taking advantage of these life-saving vaccines, both children and parents can benefit from improved health and well-being.

She expressed gratitude towards community health volunteers and healthcare workers for their efforts in making vaccines accessible to everyone. The Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye LG, Mr. Usman Akanbi Hamzat stated that the campaign targets three major infections: Yellow fever, Measles, and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), with a focus on specific age groups for each. The initiative aims to provide immunization services to individuals ranging from 9 months to 44 years old for Yellow fever, 9 to 59 months for Measles, and girls between the ages of 9 to 14 for HPV.

He said the vaccination drive will commence on October 19 and extend through November, unfolding in two phases, each covering half of the wards for a duration of two weeks. The campaign intends to reach eligible individuals across various settings, including communities, schools, religious institutions, primary healthcare centers, secondary and tertiary hospitals, ensuring widespread coverage and maximum impact

The Council Boss highlighted the crucial role of communication during the vaccination campaign, emphasizing the need to address misconceptions and promote accurate information regarding vaccine efficacy and safety. He encouraged individuals to exercise caution when encountering rumors, misinformation, disinformation, and incorrect perceptions about immunization, particularly those circulated through social media platforms.

To ensure accurate and reliable information, the Council Boss advised the public to rely on trusted sources, such as qualified health professionals, and reputable websites belonging to organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.

The Chairman commended the Lagos State government’s efforts in strengthening the healthcare system and highlighted the health infrastructures in place for the benefit of both local residents and the wider population of Lagos. He emphasized the importance of partnerships in enhancing health service delivery, drawing attention to the collaboration between the LGA and Finland on Health, Human Capital Development, and Cultural Exchange Initiatives.

He said the partnership aims to leverage the expertise and resources of both parties, ultimately improving healthcare outcomes for the community. The Chairman noted that such international alliances demonstrate a commitment to fostering a healthier society and promoting the well-being of citizens.
