The Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has reclaimed its streets from illegal trading, restoring much-needed cleanliness and order to three bustling communities.
On Friday, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa’s administration dispatched its environmental enforcement team to Bogije, Lakowe, and Ogunfayo, dismantling makeshift stalls and clearing road setbacks that had long been hijacked by informal traders. The exercise, led by Chief Technical Adviser on Environment, Mr. Lateef Ajumobi, responded to mounting complaints from residents and commuters frustrated by blocked pedestrian paths and snarled traffic.
“Trading activities are only allowed in designated markets,” Ajumobi declared as teams moved in to restore the thoroughfares. “Walkways and road setbacks are not trading spaces—they guarantee safe movement for both people and vehicles. This isn’t about punishing traders but about restoring order and protecting lives.”

Within hours, roadside goods were removed, walkways reopened, and vehicles began moving freely through corridors that had previously been choked with congestion. Residents applauded the swift action, hailing it as a long-overdue intervention.

“For months, we’ve struggled with blocked walkways and heavy traffic,” said Bogije commuter Mrs. Aderonke Hassan. “This cleanup is timely and commendable. It makes our daily movement safer and faster.”
Hon. Olowa praised the enforcement team’s effort and reminded the public that environmental cleanliness and safety remain central to his administration’s agenda. “We will not compromise on safety, orderliness, or environmental standards,” he said. “Businesses must thrive in approved markets, not at the expense of public safety or urban order.”

Officials confirmed that traders were redirected to designated markets and warned that repeat violations would draw penalties, including goods confiscation or fines. By day’s end, the cleared routes stood as a testament to Ibeju-Lekki’s resolve to balance commerce with community welfare, ensuring that vibrant economic activity coexists with the right of every resident to clean, accessible streets.
