Celebrity fashion designer and entrepreneur, Toyin Lawani, has publicly accused a Lagos-based private health facility, Euracare Hospital, of alleged medical negligence following a surgery she underwent at the hospital.
Lawani, founder of Tiannah Empire, made the allegations on Sunday in a series of emotional posts shared on her Instagram page, where she detailed what she described as a traumatic medical experience that left her with lasting health complications.
According to Lawani, she visited Euracare Hospital for what she described as a “spine surgery,” but subsequently suffered severe complications, including temporary loss of the use of her legs and a serious lung infection, despite reportedly spending close to ₦100 million on medical care at the facility.
In her posts, the fashion designer alleged that the situation worsened after the initial surgery, forcing her to undergo multiple corrective procedures.
“Till today I still can’t speak well or walk well. I had complications and started bleeding in my lungs. I had to be taken back into the theatre the next day for another operation. Before I knew it, I stopped breathing,” she wrote.
Lawani further claimed that doctors had to puncture her lungs during emergency intervention, which she said resulted in damage to her vocal cords. She alleged that after being discharged, she lost the use of her legs and had to return to the same hospital for further treatment.
She said she later contacted an ear, nose and throat specialist in the United Kingdom, who advised that another surgery be carried out to remove a tracheotomy tube and assess her ability to breathe independently.
Following the procedures, Lawani said she was flown to the UK with her family, where doctors reportedly informed her that she had developed a lung infection and required yet another surgery.
“When I got to the UK, the doctors showed me lumps in my lungs and said I had an infection. Since then, I’ve been in and out of the hospital,” she alleged, adding that she continued to bear the financial burden of the treatments despite what she described as medical mismanagement.
The designer also threatened legal action against the hospital, stating that she would pursue the matter when she fully recovers.
Her allegations come amid heightened public scrutiny of Euracare Hospital following claims by renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who recently accused the same facility of negligence allegedly leading to the death of her son.
In response to Adichie’s claims, the Lagos State Government has ordered a full investigation into the incident at the hospital.
As of the time of filing this report, Euracare Hospital had not issued an official response to Lawani’s allegations.
