How CATS Ladies Emerge Champions Of Maiden Girls Play Sports Football Tournament

In a thrilling final at the FIFA Goal Project in Abuja, CATS Ladies from Lagos State emerged as the champions of the inaugural Girls Play Sports Football Tournament, defeating Plateau United Queens 2-1 on Sunday, September 29, 2024.

The match was a keenly competed affair with Plateau United taking an early lead through Agnes Otata in the ninth minute. However, CATS Ladies fought back and leveled the score in the 50th minute through Ebube Anyanwu. Just four minutes later, Anyanwu completed her brace to secure the victory for her team.

The win earned CATS Ladies a cash prize of two million naira, while Plateau United Queens received one million naira as runners-up. Other participating teams also received cash prizes for their efforts.

The tournament, initiated by Honorable Ayo Omidiran, founder of the Ayomidiran Foundation, appreciated the support of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Federal Housing Authority, State Football Associations, and the participating teams for the success of the inaugural competition.

 “This success reflects the power of collaboration and our shared commitment to advancing grassroots women’s football and empowering the girl-child through sports.”

CATS Ladies gaffer, Chinasa Ukandu complimented the efforts of the team for achieving a landmark feat.

“These girls have shown tremendous determination and heart, and this win is a testament to their hard work.”

Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, Oyetunde Ojo lauded the excellent organization of the tournament in giving the girl child a productive event.

“We are proud to be part of an initiative that empowers young girls through sports and promotes national unity.”

NFF general secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi extolled the impacts of the tournament towards the growth of women’s football.

“This competition lays a strong foundation for the growth of women’s football in Nigeria, and we are excited to see its future impact.”

Nigerian Olympic legend Mary Onyali, a GPS ambassador, lauded the initiative for providing a platform for young female athletes to excel.

Other dignitaries that graced the event were, Comptroller O. A. Adebakin (FDC, DSM, MNIM, PSC), representing the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service; Senator Adebayo Adeyeye, Chairman of the Board of Nigerian Ports Authority; Chairman of the NPFL Honorable Gbenga Elegbeleye; NFF Director of Competitions Ruth David; Nigeria Women Football League Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi; NWFL board member Rukayat Alaya; Secretary General of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria Ikenna Okonkwo; and Senator Gbenga Obadara, an APC chieftain from Ogun State.
