Greater Kosofe Students’ Union Holds Menstrual Health Awareness Programme in Ikosi
The Greater Kosofe Students’ Union has organised a menstrual health and hygiene awareness programme tagged “Her Body, Her Power” to commemorate International Women’s Day, aimed at educating young girls on menstrual hygiene and building confidence among female students.
The event, held at Ikosi High School, brought together female students for an interactive session on menstrual health, hygiene and personal wellbeing. The programme was convened by the Vice President Administration of the union, Comr. Anjorin Desire Ayotemide, while the President of the union, Comr. Alao Temitope Bamidele, addressed the students on the mission of the organisation.
Speaking at the event, Bamidele explained that the union serves as the apex body connecting and representing students from secondary to tertiary institutions across Kosofe, adding that initiatives like the awareness programme are part of its commitment to supporting students and positively impacting the community. He stressed that educating young girls about menstrual health is essential in helping them feel confident, informed and supported both in school and in life.
One of the speakers, Omoloye Oluwatoni, educated the students on the importance of understanding menstrual health, noting that menstruation is a natural biological process that should not be surrounded by shame or myths. She encouraged the students to practise proper menstrual hygiene by regularly changing sanitary products, maintaining cleanliness and properly disposing used materials.
Also speaking, Ayotemide highlighted the significance of International Women’s Day, noting that the annual celebration recognises the achievements of women across different sectors. She cited notable Nigerian women such as Funke Akindele and Folorunsho Alakija as examples of women who have made remarkable impacts in their fields, encouraging the students to remain confident and ambitious.
As part of the programme, menstrual hygiene kits containing sanitary pads, wipes and hand sanitizers were distributed to the students to support proper hygiene practices. The management of the school expressed appreciation to the union for the initiative and indicated interest in partnering for future programmes that will benefit students.
The union also acknowledged the support of several individuals and sponsors, including Kafilat Ogbara, Samiat Abolanle Bada and Abubakar Adetola, among others, while reaffirming its commitment to organising programmes that empower students and promote development across the community.
