The Lagos State Government has rescued a mentally ill woman accused of causing disturbances in a residential area in Agege, following public outcry on social media.
The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, confirmed the intervention in a statement shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday.
According to Ogunlende, officials from the ministry’s Rescue Team promptly responded to distress reports from residents and successfully evacuated the woman for medical evaluation and rehabilitation.
The intervention came after a viral video showed a visibly distressed resident pleading for government action over the woman’s alleged violent behaviour. The clip, which quickly gained traction online, claimed that the woman—who reportedly lived at No. 31 Adedosu Street, Agege—had been throwing stones into nearby homes and threatening neighbours with weapons, including a machete and knife.
The video triggered widespread concern among Lagosians, many of whom urged authorities to step in to protect the community and ensure the woman received proper care.
In his statement, Commissioner Ogunlende confirmed that the woman had been relocated to one of the state’s designated care and rehabilitation centres.
“She has been taken to one of our centres for care.
I urge members of the public to continue reporting similar incidents requiring government intervention. We remain committed to ensuring social stability and protecting vulnerable persons across Lagos,” Ogunlende said.
He reaffirmed the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to maintaining public safety while prioritising the welfare of all residents, especially those in vulnerable conditions.
The Ministry of Youth and Social Development further encouraged Lagosians to report cases involving mentally unstable persons or other social emergencies through its official helplines for timely government response.
