Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has strongly condemned a controversial post circulating on X (formerly Twitter) that advised Igbo men to avoid marrying women from their own ethnic group.
The viral tweet urged Igbo men to “look outside for a wife,” claiming without evidence that Igbo women were likely to falsely accuse their husbands of raping their daughters. The user suggested East Africa, particularly Rwanda, as an alternative place for men to find wives.
Reacting to the post, Genevieve Nnaji, an acclaimed actress and proud Igbo woman from Mbaise, Imo State, criticized the narrative as dangerous and rooted in a refusal to take responsibility for abusive behavior.
“In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking accountability, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it,” she wrote.
While some users argued that the controversial post was directed at women who allegedly make false accusations, not all Igbo women, Nnaji maintained her stance, emphasizing the harm in generalizing an entire group.
She added, “The same way a woman can’t tell an abusive man apart from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. ‘Not all women.’”
Her response has sparked a broader conversation about gender-based stereotypes, accountability in relationships, and the cultural implications of painting entire communities with a single brush.
Nnaji’s stance continues to attract widespread support from social media users and advocates who warn against narratives that promote division and harmful generalizations.
