The Federal Government has approved the sum of ₦17 billion for the reconstruction of the Ijora-Olopa Bridge in Lagos, which was severely damaged by fire following a tanker explosion in April 2024. The incident caused massive structural damage to a critical portion of the bridge, leading to traffic disruptions and safety concerns in the area.

Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave swift approval for the emergency funding to restore the bridge. He stated that the intervention is part of the administration’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and reducing transport challenges in Nigeria’s busiest city.

The repair work will involve the removal and replacement of the affected sections, structural reinforcement, resurfacing, and installation of new safety features. The project, awarded to a reputable local contractor, is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, welcomed the move and commended the Federal Government for its quick response. He emphasized the importance of intergovernmental collaboration in addressing infrastructure needs, especially in a megacity like Lagos.

Residents and road users have expressed relief over the planned reconstruction, urging the government to ensure transparency and quality delivery. The bridge plays a vital role in connecting Lagos Island to the mainland and its restoration is expected to ease traffic flow and boost economic activity.
