Fashola Gets International Appointment to Fight Diseases in Nigeria

Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Resolve to Save Lives Nigeria (RTSL Nigeria), a global public health organization focused on combating cardiovascular diseases and preventing epidemics.

The announcement was made on Friday, with RTSL Nigeria praising Fashola’s leadership credentials and public service experience as vital to strengthening health outcomes in Nigeria.

🏥 About RTSL Nigeria:

RTSL Nigeria is an affiliate of the global health initiative Resolve to Save Lives, founded by Dr. Tom Frieden, former director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The organization partners with national governments to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and epidemic threats, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

RTSL Nigeria has been instrumental in:

Supporting Nigeria’s hypertension control program.

Improving health emergency preparedness.

Promoting healthy public policies in collaboration with state and federal institutions.

💬 Why Fashola?

The organization said Fashola’s wealth of governance experience, legal expertise, and advocacy for infrastructure and institutional reform will add strategic value to RTSL Nigeria’s board and national mission.

> “Mr. Fashola’s insights as a two-time governor and federal minister will deepen our understanding of how public policies can protect lives and prevent diseases at scale,” a statement from RTSL Nigeria read.

🇳🇬 A Broader Commitment:

Fashola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), served as Governor of Lagos State from 2007 to 2015, where he was credited with expanding access to healthcare, upgrading public hospitals, and pioneering health insurance policies. He later served as Minister under the Buhari administration until 2023.

In his response, Fashola expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged his commitment to contributing towards a healthier Nigeria through policy-driven solutions and global partnerships.

> “I am honoured to support an organisation that is saving lives through evidence-based public health interventions. Nigeria must win the fight against preventable diseases,” he stated.
