The Chairman of Isolo Local Council Development Area, Olasoju Adebayo has called on all stakeholders for proper implementation of safety regulations and required procedures than leaving it alone in the hands of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

The Chairman on Thursday made the call during an event organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps at Terminal 2 in Oshodi.

Olasoju added his voice at the flag-off ceremony of the Ember Month Campaign on the  need for restraint  and strict respect to the state’s traffic laws and safety guidelines.

The event was themed “Speed Thrills But Kills – Drive Responsibly, Avoid Overloading”.

Olasoju, who was represented at the occasion by his chief of staff, Musbau Quadri, gave a speech during which he stated that the FRSC’s campaign is urgently required in order to stop unnecessary accidents and ensure a peaceful Yuletide.

“This event is desperately needed to ensure that people’s awareness of safety procedures and rules is reawakened.
It is up to us to maintain measures and safety regulations in order to have tranquil and memorable months.
The overall goal of this year’s theme, “Speed thrills but kills – Drive responsibly, Avoid overloading,” is to reduce, if not completely eliminate, traffic accidents. If all road users adhere to this goal, they will be less likely to occur.
We will domesticate this campaign in our council area and urge drivers to observe the law more carefully to prevent accidents over the holiday season, Olasoju said.

Earlier in his remarks, the Lagos State Sector Commander, CC Babatunde Farinloye explained that the campaign became important to prevent avoidable road accidents as he revealed that no fewer than 78 lives were lost to road traffic crashes in 353 road accidents the command recorded from January to September this year.

He went on to call on the distinguished guests and other stakeholders at the event to join hands with the corps to ensure zero fatality on the roads.

“We, therefore, call on every stakeholder and indeed road user to support the corps in this arduous task through exemplary conduct on the road and the propagation of the message of safety across our various constituencies. We have a role to play as captains of industry, heads of institutions and families. We particularly charge the road transport service providers to uphold the responsibility of self-regulation to limit incidents of aborted trips due to infractions and arrests. Nigerians deserve road transportation that is efficient, equitable and safe. This we must all strive to deliver to our people and nation.”

The event had in attendance different bodies of road transport workers, representatives of Guinness Nigeria, member of the National Youth Service Corps among others.
