Ejigbo dredges Oke-Afa canal as Obe warns against illegal waste disposal

Relief is on the way for residents living on adjoining streets to the Oke-Afa canal from Jakande Estate to Bucknor following the decision of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area to dredge portions of the canal for easy movement of water to the lagoon.
A visibly upset Obe, who visited the site, was shocked that the canal has been silted due to incessant and illegal disposal of waste.
He warned against illegal disposal of waste into the canal adding that it was choking the drains bringing flood water to the canal from delivering and causing homes to be flooded.
Saying the canal is not a dumpsite, Obe warned people in the community not to endanger their own lives and properties.
Bello gave the warning while inspecting the dredging of blocked Fasheun link bridge canal, a boundary between Ejigbo and Isolo LCDA, which has been causing flood in the community.
He said the council was already putting measures in place to clear all canals in the council in order to prevent flood and diseases.
“So our intention is that let us clear the canal, create the path for water, by the time we get to the next raining season it will be easier for us to trace,” he said.
The chairman also called on the Lagos State Government to take advantage of shared boundaries and create more link bridges in order to ease vehicular movement around Ejigbo and Isolo LCDAs.
“If you look at the number of hours spent from Iyana Ejigbo to Jakande, even to Pako, to Okota, if you are going to Apple Junction Festac, taking this road and the other one there, you would have at least boycotted the bottleneck,” he said.
The chairman, Ashamu Bucknor CDA, Mr. Saka appreciated the council chairman on behalf of all the CDAs as he pointed out the great relief the dredging would bring to the community.
His words: “The de-silting of the canal will bring much relief to the affected communities/CDAs (Ashamu East, Peace Home Valley, Canal View Phase II, Promise Land and Unity CDAs).
“It has always been a nightmare to the residents of these communities once it rains because the flood that comes from far and near including the popular Ile Zik, has to move through as a result of the silted canal which cannot absorb the intensity of the flood while raining.
“The coalition of the affected CDAs is grateful to the intervention of Ejigbo LCDA in this regard.
“The coalition is also calling on both the State and Federal Governments to come to our aid in finding lasting solutions to the yearly challenge.” he said.
