Dangote Petroleum Refinery has commenced nationwide retail sales of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, at a pump price of ₦739 per litre through MRS Oil Nigeria Plc filling stations, marking a significant intervention aimed at easing fuel costs and stabilising Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
With the rollout now in effect, motorists across the country can access petrol at the new price at more than 2,000 MRS outlets nationwide, a notable reduction compared to the higher prices previously recorded in many parts of the country. The move follows Dangote Refinery’s recent decision to cut its ex-depot (gantry) price to ₦699 per litre, a measure designed to give marketers room to lower pump prices and pass on the benefits to consumers.
Industry observers say the development could provide relief for households and businesses, particularly during a period of heightened demand, while also strengthening Nigeria’s energy security through increased reliance on locally refined products. By expanding domestic supply, the initiative is expected to reduce dependence on imported petrol and help conserve foreign exchange amid ongoing global market pressures.
The refinery has praised marketers who have aligned with the new pricing structure, describing them as patriotic partners, and has urged others in the downstream sector to adopt the revised pricing so Nigerians across all regions can fully benefit. Dangote Refinery has also warned against the creation of artificial scarcity, calling on consumers to report any stations that fail to sell PMS at the approved ₦739 per litre rate.
Regulatory authorities have been encouraged to remain vigilant and take firm action against any attempts to undermine the pricing framework. Consumers, meanwhile, have been advised to avoid purchasing petrol at inflated prices when cheaper, locally refined alternatives are available at designated MRS stations, with reporting channels provided for non-compliant outlets.
The nationwide rollout comes amid broader reforms by Dangote Refinery aimed at deepening market participation, including lowering minimum offtake requirements for marketers and increasing daily gantry loading volumes. These steps signal growing confidence in local refining capacity and reinforce the refinery’s role in reshaping Nigeria’s downstream petroleum landscape.
