The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture (LSCAC), in line with its mandate to promote, preserve, and showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage, recently held its annual Indigenous Traditional Competition at the Olusosun Recreation Ground in Oregun, Ikeja.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Idowu Olulowo Johnson, Director and CEO of LSCAC, explained that the competition is aimed at reviving cherished cultural activities such as the Ayo board game and traditional wrestling, attracting enthusiastic participation from across the Ikeja division.
He noted that this year’s edition was hosted in Ikeja, adding that the event rotates among the five IBILE divisions of Lagos State to promote inclusivity and community involvement.

According to him, “This competition promotes our way of life, fosters peaceful coexistence within communities, and educates the youth about their cultural roots. It also boosts the local economy and strengthens community bonds.”

Mr. Johnson urged parents to encourage their children to take part in future editions, stressing the importance of young people in preserving indigenous traditions.

The event was officially opened by High Chief Tajudeen Muili, the Osin Egungun of Oregun Land, who also facilitated the presence of the masquerades. A major highlight was the Egungun masquerade performance, which brought colour and authenticity to the traditional wrestling segment.

Winners emerged in different categories of the Ayo board game and wrestling contest. Mr. Muyideen Adebayo took first place in the Ayo game, while Mr. Joshua Joseph emerged victorious in the wrestling competition. They were presented with gifts and recognition to encourage participation and promote cultural pride.

The Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing and celebrating the diverse traditions that embody the spirit of Lagos.

In attendance were members of the Council’s management team and other notable guests from the Oregun Kingdom, who gathered to witness the colourful celebration.
