The Medical Officer of Health (MOH), Isolo Local Council Development Area, Dr. Baqiah Nojimudeen-Yesufu has said that the task of controlling coronavirus spread in the community has not affected the services rendered by the Primary Healthcare Centres PHCs), affirming that the centers across the council area remain functional despite the additional workload of COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking with ECHONEWS, Dr. Yesufu noted that it was necessary for basic health services such as immunisation and other important health services as peculiar to women, nursing mothers, new born babies and children to be ongoing in order to sustain the eradication of vaccine preventable diseases.

She disclosed that the ongoing fight against the pandemic had brought about unprecedented adjustment in the scope of immunisation as the parents now have to bring their children to the PHCs for immunisation, saying the health workers were no longer opportuned to visit their houses to immunise their children.

She explained: “Immunisation exercise has been ongoing. Though, the outreaches have been affected due to the lockdown but parents can get immunisation for their children at the health facilities.

“Since the pandemic outbreak, the health workers have been involved in the community based case search and as such can’t carry out outreaches. It is important we continue the basic health services in all PHCs in order to prevent the outbreak of vaccine preventable diseases.”

She, however, cautioned residents against unnecessary visitation to hospital and other health care facilities, reiterating that visit should be made only if it is necessary.

“My advice is that parents should reduce unnecessary visits to the hospital if it’s not important. They can come to receive immunisation for their children. Only children that need the immunisation should visit the clinics.

“Some of them aren’t adhering to the stay-at-home order. They even come to the clinic with children that are not ill or not taking immunization,” she complained.
