Court Sentences Man To Jail Over Cybercrime

The Economic and Finacial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned one Adebanjo Olalekan before the High Court in Ikeja Lagos for indulging in Internet fraud.

At the court on Thursday, the EFCC Counsel, Iyabo Daramola, tendered a review of facts of the case and also submitted confessional statement by the lawbreaker, which was followed by a ruling by the Presiding Judge, Olubukola Okunuga.

Okunuga sentenced the offender to one-year in prison with an option of N1,000,000 fine following his guilty plea to a two-count charge bordering on possession of false documents and obtaining through false pretence.

One of the counts reads: “That you, Adebambo Fawas Olamilekan, on or about 14th May, 2024 at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, had in your possession documents, where you falsely represented yourself as a female, which were printed from your iPhone 13 pro, and which documents you knew or ought to have known contained false pretence and committed an offence contrary to 320 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”

Justice Okunuga ordered that the convict’s iPhone device as well as a Zenith Bank managers cheque of N100,000.00 be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

His offences were said to have contravened Sections 320 and 323 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
