The Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a citizen of Malaysia, Liang You, to two years in prison over unlawful importation of prohibited drugs.
You, during his trial on one count charge of unlawful dealings in prohibited drugs, which was presided by Justice Ibrahim Kala, pleaded guilty to peddling drug weighing 26.10kg, as imposed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
The convict, according to the NDLEA’s lawyer, Abu Ibrahim, was caught with the illicit drug in two suit cases upon his arrival at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport Ikeja Lagos, on July 25, 2025.
Ibrahim further told the court that the offences committed by the defendant, contravened Section 11 (a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap. N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under the same Act.
Abu, on hearing the offender’s plea, tendered his confessional statement, in Chinese and English languages, bulk of illicit drugs recovered from him and his international passport, to mention few, urging the court to convict and sentence him accordingly.
In her plea for leniency, You’s lawyer, Lilian Omotunde, pleaded with the court to be lenient in sentencing her client, whom she claimed is a driver.
Omotunde then urged the court to give her client a fine option in lieu of custodian sentence.
Justice Kala sentenced You to two years imprisonment with an option of N1 million.
