Popular Nigerian comedian Destalker has revealed that before pursuing a career in comedy, he attempted internet fraud but was unsuccessful.
Speaking on a recent episode of the In-house Gist podcast, Destalker said the friend who introduced him to online scamming is now a Christian cleric.
“Before I left Enugu, I tried internet fraud with one of my friends who is now a pastor, but I wasn’t successful at it. We would book night sessions at cybercafés for N250. I couldn’t afford it then, so my friend always paid for me. He is now a big pastor, Rev. Nelson Umeh,” Destalker explained.
The comedian admitted that his kindhearted nature made it impossible for him to defraud people. While his friend scouted victims online, Destalker said he spent his time chatting with family, friends, and old schoolmates on Facebook before falling asleep.
“Because it [internet fraud] was not my destiny, I can’t defraud a person. Through all that I went through, I have grown confident that no one can stop me from achieving my goal,” he added.
Destalker also addressed criticisms from other comedians, saying some claimed he could not perform at certain shows without their support. He countered that he has achieved success independently, noting that some of those shows no longer exist and some former comedians have faded from relevance.
