The group B opener of the CAF Women’s Champions League saw defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies defeat Nigeria champions Bayelsa Queens 2-1 at the Grand de Stade (stadium) in Marakech.
The Prosperity Girls were composed in the opening stages of the game and took the game to the defending champion as Sebastine Flourish proved difficult to be handled by the opponent.
It took a moment of great finish from Lelona Daweti in the 31st minute to put Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies ahead in the game.
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies took the deserved lead to the break.
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies dominated proceedings early in the second half as they pegged their Nigerian opponent to their own half.
A costly blunder from the Prosperity Girls gifted Lelona Daweti her second goal in the game, which came in the 57th minute.
The introduction of Bayelsa Queens bullish forward, Mary Anjor gave the Prosperity Girls more possession in the game as the prolific striker made her introduction count as she powered in a right footed strike into the back of the net to pull a goal back for Bayelsa Queens.
More drama ensued towards the end of the game as Bayelsa Queens tried getting the equalizer but the defense of Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies proved difficult to break as the defending champions ran away with a valuable win.
