The Lagos State government is taking proactive steps to tackle the issue of dilapidated structures by offering support to developers and property owners.
According to a statement issued by Mukaila Sanusi, the Deputy Director of the Ministry’s Public Affairs Unit, this was disclosed by Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.
Dr. Olumide mentioned that the ministry is taking an extensive approach to renovation, going beyond just remodeling plans. Instead, they will provide comprehensive technical support with a focus on design and renovation of these buildings.
He said that this initiative matches with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2019. Also, with an intent to promote building safety.
” The ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, as mandated by the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2019(as amended) is willing to extend its responsibility from approving remodelling of existing buildings to providing technical assistance to developers and owners of distressed buildings, especially in the design and remodeling of such buildings.” Olumide stated.
He stressed that it is essential to upkeep buildings before they become unsafe as buildings have a limited life span and require regular maintenance. If neglected, they can become unsafe and collapse, putting the people and the environment at risk.
Also, he said the initiative offers a solution to resolve the distressed buildings issue by providing alternatives to demolition.
