The Lagos State Government has arrested a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver following the tragic death of a pedestrian, identified as Elizabeth Fresh, who was struck by a high-capacity bus at Airport Junction, Ikeja.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) confirmed the incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, involving a bus operated by the Red and White Bus Operating Company. The driver initially fled the scene but was later tracked down and handed over to the police.
According to LAMATA’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, eyewitnesses confirmed that Miss Fresh was hit by a bus from the Red and White fleet. The agency immediately reached out to the victim’s family to offer condolences and assured them that the driver would face legal action.
Following official directives, the bus company presented the driver on Monday, and he was formally handed over to the police at the Domestic Wing Police Station, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in the presence of company management.
Describing the incident as a tragic loss, LAMATA reiterated its commitment to safety and accountability across all transport services. The authority also advised pedestrians to use designated footbridges when crossing BRT corridors, noting that failure to do so continues to endanger lives.
LAMATA emphasized that it will continue collaborating with transport operators, security agencies, and the public to prevent similar accidents and enhance commuter safety throughout Lagos.
