As part of ongoing efforts to promote educational advancement in Somolu, the Chairman, Hon. Lateef Ashimi, hosted a special orientation and counselling session for beneficiaries of the free General Certificate of Education (GCE) forms distributed by the local government.

The event was aimed at preparing the students for their forthcoming examinations scheduled to hold from October 24 to December 18, 2025.

Earlier this year, Chairman Ashimi had facilitated the distribution of 500 free GCE forms to underprivileged students across the community, an initiative designed to ease the financial burden on parents and ensure access to quality education.

The final batch of beneficiaries was registered earlier in the day, with the registration process closely monitored by officials to ensure transparency and efficiency.

At the sensitisation session, held at the Council Banquet Hall of the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Administrative Building, Chairman Ashimi urged the students to remain focused and strive for excellence. He was joined by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Taiwo Ojomu, and the Council Treasurer, Mr. Abayomi Odusanya, in encouraging the students to uphold the values of hard work and discipline.

Also addressing the gathering, Mrs. Shakirah Temitope Ashimi, the Chairman’s wife, emphasised that education is not just a classroom endeavour but a powerful tool for personal transformation and national development.

The event also recognised students and teachers from the recently concluded Phase 1 Summer Coaching Programme and the “Waste-to-Wealth” initiative, which took place at the Agunbiade and UNA centres.

Participants in the Waste-to-Wealth programme showcased innovative gifts made from recycled materials, which were presented to the Chairman, his wife, and the Vice Chairman. Additional items were dedicated to the local government in appreciation of their support.

Ashimi described the initiative as part of the council’s broader mission to provide a safe and productive environment for young people, while encouraging creativity and environmental responsibility. The Waste-to-Wealth programme pioneered by GreenMatex FL, NextGen Sustainable Network, and Comrade Issa Kushimo offers hands-on training in converting waste into valuable products, with significant environmental and economic benefits.

Other dignitaries in attendance included the Chief of Staff, Prince Sodiq Adeeso; Head of Education and Library Services, Mrs. Odubote; Head of Information, Mr. Akinyemi Olusegun; Centre Coordinators, Mr. Shodipo and Mr. Kamoli; and SUBEB Counsellor, Mr. Sunday Hungbo. The event also featured interactive career guidance sessions led by serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

The initiative reflects Somolu’s commitment to empowering its youth through education, innovation, and skill development laying a strong foundation for future success
