Another Building Collapse in Lagos Leaves One Dead, Eight Injured

Barely four days after two people lost their lives in a collapsed two-storey building in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State, another tragedy has occurred in the Ajegunle area of Apapa, where a three-storey building collapse claimed one life.
Eight other people were injured in the incident, which happened on Thursday at 28 Baale Alayabiagba Street.
According to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke Osanyintolu, the building, which was undergoing manual demolition, collapsed and trapped some workers beneath the debris.
“Upon arrival of the agency’s response team at the scene, it was observed that a three-storey building with a penthouse undergoing manual demolition had collapsed, trapping some workers under the rubble,” Oke Osanyintolu said.
“Information gathered from community members revealed that the building was undergoing manual demolition before it collapsed, trapping the workers on site. Eight adult males were rescued, while one adult male was recovered dead from the rubble of the collapsed building.”
He added that the injured victims received first aid treatment before being taken to hospital for further care. “The rescued victims were attended to immediately by LASAMBUS personnel and later transported to Ajeromi General Hospital,” he said.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Shakiru Amodu, also confirmed the incident, noting that one fatality was recorded. “There was a building collapse. One person died,” he said in a telephone interview.
Lagos State has witnessed several building collapses in recent times. On September 25, six people were rescued after a two-storey building collapsed on Modupeola Street in the Mangoro area of Alimosho Local Government. Similarly, on September 16, two construction workers were rescued after being trapped for four days under the rubble of a collapsed building in Ebute Metta.
