Blocked Drainage Causes Flood In Bamgbose Street
By Sherif Salau
Residents of Bamgbose Street, Lagos Island were overwhelmed with flood caused by blocked drainages and a brief rain which compounded the situation of the community.
What began with as a drizzle quickly transformed the busy area into an impassable stretch of water. With the carriageway submerged, walkers of all ages were forced to scale the fence simply to move from one side of the street to the other.
Local observers attribute the flooding to blocked drainage system that failed to clear the runoff. Regardless of the modest volume of rain, the clogged drainage allowed water to accumulate swiftly, cutting off normal access and disrupting movement along the street.
The situation caused immediate inconvenience for residents, marketers, and passersby who rely on Bamgbose Street as a key route. Vehicles were forced to divert or wait while those on foot navigated the fence in an effort to continue their journeys.
The incident highlights a continuous challenge on Lagos Island, where inadequate or poorly maintained gutters repeatedly turn even light rainfall into a significant disruption. On Bamgbose Street today, the consequence were plain: a public road rendered unusable, and ordinary people forced into unusual measures just to cross it.
As the inundation gradually subside, attention returns to the underlying issue of the blocked drains which gives recurring question of how many more such issues residents must endure before lasting actions are made.
