Students, Teachers Escape Unhurt as School Structure Collapses in Lagos
Students and teachers narrowly escaped tragedy on Monday after a four-storey school building collapsed in the Aguda area of Ogba, Lagos.
The structure, which housed Yemco Nursery Primary and Comprehensive College, gave way around noon, prompting panic among residents and people in the neighbourhood.
The school building, located at 11 Adudatu Street behind County Hospital in Ogba, reportedly collapsed just minutes after students and staff were evacuated from the premises.
Witnesses said the swift action taken by teachers and school authorities helped prevent what could have been a major tragedy.
According to residents, the evacuation began shortly after signs of structural distress were noticed in the building, prompting school officials to move students out of the structure.
The building eventually collapsed shortly after the evacuation was completed.
At the time of filing this report, no casualties had been confirmed, although the incident caused panic in the area as residents and emergency responders gathered at the scene.
Authorities are expected to carry out a structural assessment and investigation to determine the cause of the collapse.
The incident has also renewed concerns about building safety and structural compliance in parts of Lagos, where cases of building collapses have raised questions about construction standards and regulatory enforcement.
