Obayemi Shares Inspiring Vision Fueling The Amazons Tennis Tournament
By Saheed Afolabi
Convener of the Amazons Tennis Tournament, Ambassador Obayemi Joy has opened up about the passion and purpose driving this empowering women’s tennis initiative as the 2026 edition draws rapid attention.
Born from a profound love for the sport and a mission to level the playing field, the tournament was created to open doors for female players in a discipline long dominated by men. What began as a heartfelt idea has blossomed into one of Africa’s premier women’s tennis events, drawing competitors from tennis clubs throughout Nigeria and showcasing remarkable talent and determination.
Timed to coincide with International Women’s Day celebrations, the Amazons Tennis Tournament serves as a powerful platform to elevate women’s voices, promote wellness, and raise awareness about health issues impacting women.
The inaugural edition welcomed 86 participants, but the upcoming 2026 edition has already surpassed expectations with 124 registered players.
Obayemi’s vision stretches far beyond Nigeria’s borders. The long-term goal is to evolve the Amazons Tennis Tournament into a truly international showcase, inviting recreational female players from around the world to compete in Nigeria for compelling prize money. To heighten the stakes and reward progress, plans include launching a dedicated ranking system that will encourage ongoing skill development and fiercer competition.
The organizers said they introduce the Amazons Junior Championship a focused platform to nurture Nigeria’s most promising young female talents and expand competitive pathways for girls in tennis.
The 2026 Amazons Tennis Tournament is scheduled to take place on March 28, 2026 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club (opposite TBS, Onikan, Lagos). Action kicks off at 9:00 a.m.
