The Lagos State Government, through the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, organised a law sensitisation programme in Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA) aimed at educating residents on newly enacted laws, civic rights, and responsibilities.

The engagement, held as part of the state’s commitment to participatory governance, brought together community leaders, market representatives, faith-based leaders, and residents to bridge the gap between legislation and everyday community life.

Representing Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, underscored the importance of civic awareness, describing public understanding of laws as the foundation of social order, accountability, and effective governance.

She noted that laws can only achieve their intended impact when citizens are properly informed, empowered, and actively involved in governance processes.

Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Hon. Wasiu Olowu commended the Lagos State Government for the initiative and called for the programme to be institutionalised, suggesting that such sensitisation engagements should be held at least twice a year to deepen civic consciousness at the grassroots.

Officials from key state agencies took turns to educate residents on their mandates and services. Barr. Abosede Olaleye, representing the Citizens’ Mediation Bureau (CMB), informed participants of the Bureau’s free mediation services and provided directions to its Ikorodu office on Oreyo Road, beside the Ikorodu Stadium, encouraging residents to explore alternative dispute resolution channels.

From the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), Mrs. Folashade Ashaye enlightened residents on consumer rights and mechanisms for reporting unfair trade practices. She also disclosed plans by the agency to establish offices in all local government areas to enhance accessibility.

Mr. Kehinde David, representing the Lagos State Law Reform Commission, spoke on recent legal reforms, including laws regulating organ donation, emphasising the importance of public understanding in promoting safety, transparency, and trust.

The interactive session also guided residents on how to engage government through established platforms such as town hall budget meetings and the Citizens’ Gate portal, reinforcing the role of citizens in accountability, feedback, and development planning.

The programme attracted broad participation from community stakeholders, including the CDC Chairman, Alhaji Rasak Ibiyeye; market leaders represented by Alhaja Kaolat; and various CDA representatives. Opening prayers were offered by Pastor Samson and Imam Kamaldeen, symbolising unity and shared responsibility.

Participants described the sensitisation programme as timely and impactful, noting that it strengthened awareness of legal rights, civic duties, and available government support structures.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustained community engagement, civic education, and grassroots inclusion as key drivers of a more informed, resilient, and participatory society.
