The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on transportation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mr Toyin Aremu has highlighted the role of AI in the modernization of the Lagos state transportation sector.
Aremu recently participated as a panelist at the Artificial Intelligence Conference hosted by Elite Global Intelligence Technologies at the American Corner, Lekki. The discussion focused on the crucial role of AI in Nigeria’s developing multimodal transportation sector.
Aremu emphasized Sanwo-Olu’s dedication to using technology to alleviate traffic congestion in Lagos, ultimately aiming for a smoother traffic flow and reduced reliance on human intervention in traffic enforcement.
Recognizing the global shift towards AI for enhanced productivity and reduced human interaction, Aremu pointed out the limitations of traditional traffic management methods in the face of rapidly increasing vehicle numbers in Nigeria. Analog traffic lights and human traffic controllers struggle to accurately assess peak traffic periods and determine real-time road conditions.
Aremu highlighted the government’s exploration of AI-powered solutions, such as intelligent traffic lights equipped with sensors. These sensors would analyze real-time traffic data, enabling more efficient traffic control.
Aremu further explained that Lagos State, along with other states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are already implementing innovative solutions. For instance, cameras are deployed in Lagos to identify vehicle registration violations, automatically notifying offenders via text message. This system is planned to expand to road safety enforcement. Additionally, Lagos BRT buses are now equipped with cameras connected to a central system for enhanced driver and passenger safety and monitoring.
Aremu expressed gratitude to the conference organizers and encouraged all Nigerians to actively contribute to the nation’s progress by developing new ideas and embracing innovation for a better future.
