The Community Development Committee (CDC), led by Venerable Adetunji Samuel Adewuyi, recently held a dialogue with leaders of the Arewa Community in Alimosho Local Government to address the activities of scavengers, commonly known as “Iron condemn,” who are predominantly members of the Arewa community.
The meeting brought together essential stakeholders, including CDC executives, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Alimosho Local Government Otunba Baruwa, and Arewa Community leaders Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim and Mr. Sulaimon Haruna.
The discussion centered on establishing new guidelines for the scavengers’ activities within the local government area. The meeting provided an opportunity for collaboration among community leaders, CDC representatives, and the local government to develop effective strategies that address concerns related to scavenging while considering the interests of all parties involved.
During the dialogue, the Community Development Committee (CDC) Executives voiced concerns on behalf of the over 60 Community Development Associations (CDAs) within the local government area. These concerns included scavengers loitering around the neighborhood as early as 4 am, collecting objects and materials still in use by their owners, and stealing items such as generators and gas cookers.
After a thorough deliberation among all stakeholders, a collective resolution was reached to address these issues. The resolution outlined that scavengers (Iron condemn) will:
1. Henceforth, resume daily activities from 7:00am and close at 7:00pm effective from exactly 1 week from today, Thursday, 31st October 2024.
2. *Henceforth, wear a uniform jacket that will reflect their names, and it will be numbered. This will be effective from 2 weeks’ time.
In addition to the previously mentioned resolutions, stakeholders also agreed that any scavenger who fails to comply with these rules will be arrested immediately by the police. This measure aims to enforce the agreed-upon guidelines and ensure that all scavengers adhere to the established code of conduct.
The meeting saw the active participation of several key stakeholders, including the 1st and 2nd Vice Chairmen, Alhaji K.O. Kassim, and Apostle Z. Toki JP, respectively. Other attendees comprised members of the Executive who are also part of the Police Community Relations team, such as Alhaji Ibrahim Malaika, Pastor Ogunmodede, Chief Kasali K, and the Media Officer, Babatunde Opeyemi Yusuf.
With the involvement and consensus of these influential figures and the larger community, the agreed-upon resolutions are expected to be effectively implemented, paving the way for a more organized and accountable scavenging system within the local government area.
