A man identified as Adeola Agborin has been confined to prison for manslaughter of his lover.

Agborin was convicted by Justice Lateef Akapo at the Lagos High Court in Ikeja following his guilty plea.

The convict, initially charged with murder on January 31, 2013, was accused of killing his lover, one Martha Farinmade.

However, the court later re-arraigned him on a charge of manslaughter after a different information was submitted at the court.

In a suit marked ID/99C/15, dated July 3, 2024, the prosecution team led by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Babajide Martins, uttered that Agbonrin committed the offence on January 7, 2012, at No. 32 Majolate Street, Ilupeju, Lagos.

Martins, told the court sitting that a plea bargain agreement was agreed on which held that the defendant would serve a term of 21 years from the date of remand.

Justice Akapo affirmed that the defendant willingly accepted the plea bargain agreement and was not forced.

The judge noted that the defendant had been in custody since he was remanded in February 2012.

The judge found Agbonrin guilty and said, “I am satisfied that the defendant understands the charge and the facts presented. I am also satisfied that he entered into the plea bargain agreement freely without being influenced. I therefore accept his plea of guilty as a proof that he truly commited the offence.

“Adeola Agbonrin, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-one years imprisonment commencing from 9th February 2012.”
