Sanwo-Olu Appoints Seven- Member Governing Council For College of Nursing, Igando

Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has approved the appointment of a 7-Member Governing Council for the Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando.

The Lagos State Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, in a letter dated 23rd June, 2023, said the appointment of the 7-Member Governing Council for the College (LASCON), was in accordance with Section 5, Sub-Section 2 (d) of the Lagos State College of Nursing Law 2017.

He listed the members of the newly appointed LASCON Governing Council as Professor Olaide Bamidele Edet(Chairman); Mrs. Shonibare Dorcas Olukemi  Oluyemisi, Director of  Nursing Services, Lagos State Ministry of Health (Member); Dr. (Mrs.) Funmi Shokunbi, representing the Lagos State Ministry of Health (Member) and Dr. Bola Ofi, representing Lagos State University College of Medicine, (LASUCOM).

Others are Mrs. Salau Olukemi Olubunmi (Member), representing the Office of the Special Adviser on Education, Lagos State Ministry of Education; Comrade Olurotimi Awojiderepresenting the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives and the Provost of the College, Mrs. OyefunsoOmotope Orenuga.

Recall that the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Special Adviser on Education (OSAE), Mr. Adeniran Kasali had, in a Memo to the Governor of the State, Mr. Babajide OlusolaSanwo-Olu dated April 11, 2023, justified the need for the composition of a Governing Council for the College (LASCON).

Kasali explained that LASCON statutory Accreditation Exercise was earlier Conducted in February, 2021 by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

According to him,  the regulatory body, Nursing and Midwifery  Council of Nigeria (NMCN) having satisfied with the programmes, facilities and quality of teaching in the College, granted LASCON  a five-year full accreditation, while NBTE  granted the College the authority to commence National Diploma in Nursing Programme with effect from 1st January, 2021.

He noted that “It became necessary for the constitution of a governing council for the Institution in view of its accreditation and administrative status and in accordance with the  LagosState College of Nursing Law, 2017’’.
