By Saheed Afolabi
The coach of Lagos State Wushu Kungfu Association (LSWKA), Mathew David has explained the behind the scenes hard work that led to winning six gold medals at the 2024 Gateway Games in Ogun State.
Mathew said he has been training the athletes for over a year preparing them for the NSF with the right mindset, zeal and strength to face any opponent.
He instructed the athletes to chase knockout techniques which worked positively well for Team Lagos in the Wushu Kungfu category, while he acknowledges the athletes top performance which paved way for medals.
“Glory to God, I’ve been training this athletes for over a year plus ahead of the feature even when the festival was postponed, I kept working because I know as a technician I have to keep working and training the athletes so that they will have the strength and zeal to withstand any other thing that will come.
“I told them that what they passed through in Asaba the last time should not repeat itself and they should go for knockout this time which has worked in our favor and you can see the Lagos fighters knocked out six states athletes while most were taken out through stretchers and this is to let you know the hard training I always give them.
“The athletes gave a good account of themselves, made names for themselves and did Lagos State proud.”
The martial arts coach is certain the set target of ten gold medals in Wushu Kungfu is still achievable with the right concentration and discipline.
“We are hoping to win at least ten gold medals but we have won six gold medals for now.
“I want to appreciate the LSSC DG, who attends to our needs and makes sure we don’t lack any finances in actualizing our dreams and set objectives.”
